Living Off of the Past
Jan. 11th, 2015 03:52 pmAround 2008/2009 I took a few art courses at RCC. There I met an arrogant and highly unprofessional "teacher" whose resume at the time looked impressive. Having worked at Disney as a character designer and animator somewhat gave his arrogance an air of legitimacy. Admittedly, back then I admired his work and even, in a very brief lapse of judgement, aspired to emulate his work. What a difference seven years make.
Looking at his stuff now from a fresh and experienced perspective I can't help but feel most, if not all his work is average at best. I'm not saying he's not talented or the work is bad, it's just not as awe-inspiring as he portrayed it to be. It certainly doesn't help that most of his featured work is from his glory days at Disney. According to his resume he left Disney in 2001, so in 2008, he was seven years removed from Disney and today he's 14 years removed. How much longer is he going to continue pimping out his time at Disney? Surely such a talented genius of the arts can come up with some new stuff. Or maybe, just maybe he's not the artistic genius that he wants everyone to believe he is. I wonder...will he still be living off his Disney past in another seven years?
His sad delusional state is a warning to me. As an inspiring artist in a highly competitive field stagnation equals career death. Unlike Mr. Disney, I don't have the luxury of living off my past. I can only live in the present.
