It's freezing. The winds don't help. It's extremely cold and I don't just mean the weather. People's hearts have grown cold toward the less fortunate. Many, including myself, are one paycheck, one calamity, one anything away from being homeless, yet we have deceived ourselves into thinking that will never happen to us. We seem to use the notion of "no one helped me" as a justification to shun and judge them. We ease our conscience by convincing ourselves they brought destruction upon themselves by indulging in drugs, alcohol or slothfulness, but in reality we have no clue what set of circumstances occurred in their lives to bring them to this point. The lack of compassion that I witnessed today, was pitiful and extremely heartbreaking. We go into debt buying useless crap, but when someone is in need of help we don't have a dollar or two to spare? Whatever happened to grace and mercy? When did we as a society become so selfish, hateful, bitter, and cold?
